Diamond honing stick (stone) is mainly used for non-metallic materials grinding, also used for cast iron, silicon aluminum alloy, bronze, ceramic, and etc. Sunnen honing stone is a leader in the industry and covers a large market share.

Honing

Honing is a kind of surface processing technique which was first applied by Sunnen company for precision machining of the inner surface of cylindrical holes to improve the geometric shap, surface quality , and dimensional accuracy. The technology is usually used in the machining of components such as automotive engine cylinder, hydraulic cylinder, cylinder liner, and ect.

The diamond honing stone performs low speed rotation and linear reciprocating load motion under the action of the shaft, and completes precision machining of the workpiece surface under certain pressure and continuous flushing of grinding fluid. During each stroke of honing, the cutting force continuously changes the direction of diamond abrasive grains. Therefore, there are more opportunities for diamond breakage, and the contact friction area of the bonding agent is larger.

During the honing process, the diamonds have good cutting edges and can maintain the sharpness for a long time, resulting in high metal removal rate per unit time.

The honing speed is slow, there are many contact points on the working surface, and the vertical load on each diamond abrasive grain is relatively small, only 1/50-1/100 of that of general grinding.

Application of Diamond Honing Stone :

Honing stone is usually composed of abrasives, bonding agent, and other additives. Choose the appropriate stone based on the required machining accuracy, aperture size, material performance, and etc. There are diamond honing stick and CBN honing stone.

Diamond honing stone is mainly used for grinding wear-resistant materials such as tungsten carbide, glass, ceramics, cast iron, bronze, aluminum alloy, and etc. It is suitable for honing machines such as Sunnen, Nagel, Gehring, Belden, AccuCut, Engis, etc.

Types of Diamond Honing Stick

There are two most common types of diamond honing sticks: resin bond and metal bond

Diamond is very hard and has good wear resistance. The pressure of honing process is lower than that of grinding process, and the abrasive corrosion and passivation effect is relatively small. In order to fully utilize the diamond cutting effect and improve the utilization rate, should choose the bonding agent with high bonding strength, high holding force, and good wear resistance to match. Therefore, choose the metal bond when rough grinding.

Regardless of the formula, metal bonding agent can be compressed to the density close to 100%, reducing performance changes caused by closed pores and making the stone performance stable. In addition, the metal bond CBN honing stone is only suitable for the workpieces containing iron group elements.

Resin bond diamond honing stone is used for fine honing the workpiece with small margin and high requirements for surface roughness.

Sunnen also has vitrified bond diamond honing stone which has larger pores and high honing quality.

Single pass honing tools are also one of the honing tools, mainly including electroplated and sintered.
