Honing tools are the vanguards of the honing process, such as honing mandrel, honing head, honing stone, single pass honing tools etc. During the honing process, the shaft of the machine tool drives the honing head to rotate while performing reciprocating motion in a straight line up and down. The honing stones on the honing head remove debris from the surface of the workpiece under the certain outward expansion pressure, grinds out spiral cross mesh grinding marks.
Features and applications of honing :
In addition to high machining accuracy, shape accuracy, roundness, cylindricity, and surface quality, due to the intersecting patterns on the surface of the workpiece, it is good for the formation and maintenance of the oil film. Therefore, the life of the processed workpiece is longer than that of other processed workpiece, especially is suitable for precision parts with high relative motion requirements.
Honing processing is suitable for through hole, intermittent hole, bind hole, multi-step hole, flat surface, spherical surface, and tooth surface. The materials to be processed include cast iron, steel parts, aluminum, titanium alloys, stainless steel, ceramic materials, powder metals with surface coatings, and etc.

Types of honing head
Medium Aperture Universal Honing Head
The honing head has a front guide but no guide strip, which is used for inner hole honing without active measurement. The honing head is a cylindrical prism, and the body has good rigidity. Honing stones are odd numbered, which can reduce vibration(usually even numbered). The stone seat is directly in contact with the feed expansion cone, without the top pin or transition plate in the middle, with a simple structure and good rigidity of the feed system. If active measurement is used, a guide strip needs to be added.
Small Hole Honing head for Hearing
Small hole honing usually uses single stone honing head. The stone is fed with a single-sided wedge and embedded with two tungsten carbide guide strips to increase the rigidity of the honing head. The guide strips and stone are longer, which can improve the honing accuracy and efficiency of small and long holes.
Short Hole Honing Head
The honing head and connecting rod can be made into one rigid connection. The honing head is embedded with tungsten carbide guide strip, providing the measuring nozzle for active measurement of honing and maintaining the operation of honing head stable. The front convex part is the introduction guide, while the front end is the positioning guide for honing head in the floating fixture during working, ensuring the perpendicularity between the honing hole axis and the end face.
Due to the short length of the stone, the feed expansion center is a longer cone to improve the rigidity and accuracy of the feed system. In addition,there are strict tolerance requirements for the length of stone grooves( sliding rails of stone seat) and axial distance from the end face to ensure the cylindricity after short hole honing.
Large Hole Honing Head
The outer diameter of convex rings is close to the honing aperture to support the stone base and withstand the honing cutting force.The transverse pin on the stone is tightly attached to the inner end face of the convex ring, providing axial positioning for the stone and bear the axial force during honing.
Move the expansion cone to extend the stone seat and retract the stone by the spring coil. Adjustable large hole honing head can rotate the central small gear to cause the rack to expand and contract,and hone out a certain diameter range of holes without replacing the honing head. To hone larger diameter holes, simply replace the rack. This structure has a large processing range.
Honing Mandrel:
The structure of honing mandrel usually floating, semi-floating, and rigid types. Floating honing mandrel is mainly ball head floating structure, which is simple, flexible, and large floating range. Adjust the gap between the floating joints with nuts.
The rigid mandrel has integral structure and threaded connection structure. With high manufacturing accuracy, it is used for honing small holes, short holes, and holes that need to be inserted into the interior of the workpiece.
Diamond & CBN Honing Stone:
Honing stone is made from abrasives and bonding agents, which is direct contact part with the workpiece during honing. According to the abrasive, it is divided into conventional abrasive stone and superabrasive stone. Superabrasive honing stone has diamond honing stone and CBN honing stone.
Superabrasive honing stone has strong cutting force, low wear ration, good self-sharpening, good heat resistance, and high chemical stability. There are resin bond diamond honing stone and metal bond diamond honing stone.
Single pass honing tools has electroplated and metal bond types.
