Diamond Grinding Wheels For Tungsten Carbide Tools

Diamond Grinding Wheel For Carbide Tools
- Vitrified Bond
- Resin Bond
- Hybrid Bond
Diamond grinding wheels can be used for grinding carbide tools, such as drill bits, saw blades, sprays, or other products of specific shapes. They are commonly used with resin and vitrified bonds. Hybrid bond grinding wheels are used for Fluting.
Diamond grinding wheel for tungsten carbide tools is a kind of superhard grinding wheel with sharp and efficient. There are many bond available and it is mainly used for various grades of tungsten carbide tools. There are vitrified bond, resin bond, and hybrid metal resin bond diamond grinding wheels.
Application of Tungsten Carbide:
Tungsten Carbide Tools:
- Tungsten carbide is used as the largest amount of tool material, which can be used for make turning tools, milling cutters, planers, drill bits, etc. Tungsten cobalt carbide is suitable for short-cut processing of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as non-metallic materials such as cast iron, cast brass, bakelite, etc. Tungsten titanium cobalt carbide is suitable for long-cut processing of ferrous metals such as steel. Among similar alloys, those with higher cobalt content are used for rough machining, while those with lower cobalt content are used for fine machining.
Die Materials
- Tungsten carbide is mainly used as cold dies such as cold drawing dies, cold stamping dies, cold extrusion dies, cold heading dies, and etc.
- Under the wear-resistant working conditions of bearing impact or strong impact, the commonality of tungsten carbide cold heading dies is that it requires tungsten carbide to have good impact toughness, fracture toughness, fatigue strength, bending strength, and good wear resistance. Usually, medium to high cobalt and medium to coarse grain carbide grade are selected, such as YG15C.
Measuring Tools and Wear-Resistant Parts
- Tungsten carbide is used for wear-resistant surface inlay and parts of measuring tools, precision bearings of grinder, guide plates and rods of centerless grinder, lathe tips and other wear-resistant parts.
Thermal Spraying
- Tungsten carbide thermal spraying technology refers to molten carbide droplets are sprayed onto the surface of the coated substrate by supersonic method, forming a film like structure.
Features of Tungsten Carbide
High hardness, wear resistance
The hardness of tungsten carbide is 86-93HRA at room temperature, which is equivalent to 69-81HRC. It can keep high hardness and excellent wear resistance at 900-1000 ℃. The cutting speed can be 4-7 times longer than that of high-speed tool steel, and the life is 5-80 times longer than that .It can cut hard materials with the hardness of 50HRC.
High strength and elastic modulus
The compressive strength of tungsten carbide is as high as 6000MPa, and the elastic modulus is (4-7)x105MPa, both of which are higher than high-speed steel. But the bending strength is relatively low, usually from 1000 to 3000MPa.
Molding products are no longer processed or re ground
Due to the high hardness and brittleness of tungsten carbide, cutting or regrinding is no longer required after powder metallurgy forming and sintering. When further processing, only use electrical machining such as electrical discharge, wire cutting, electrolytic grinding or grinding wheel for grinding.
Selection of Diamond Grinding Wheel For Tungsten Carbide
Tungsten carbide is mainly used for cutting tools, so it is ideal choice for diamond grinding wheel sharpening. Resin bond, vitrified bond, and hybrid bond diamond grinding wheel is used for tungsten carbide.
Vitrified Bond &Resin Bond Diamond Grinding Wheel For Tungsten Carbide
Vitrified diamond grinding wheel has high hardness, good heat resistance, sharp cutting, high grinding efficiency, no heat or no block during the grinding process, small thermal expansion, good shape retention, no dressing, and easy control of machining accuracy.
Compared with resin bond diamond grinding wheel for tungsten carbide tools, it solves the problems of low grinding efficiency, poor shape retention, and easy deformation during the grinding tungsten carbide.
However, resin diamond grinding wheel also has advantages, which has relatively low cost and sharp cutting, especially in the stage of fine grinding and precision grinding of tungsten carbide, it is still irreplaceable..
For example, resin bond diamond grinding wheel for tungsten carbide with grit 100-120# is used for rough grinding.
If choosing resin diamond wheel with grit 120-150#, it has higher removal rate and good surface roughness. Vitrified bonding agent bond diamond more firmly than resin bonding agent, and there are larger pores between the abrasive particles and the bonding agent, each pore equivalent to the chip space on the cutting edge of single point cutting tool.
For the same grinding allowance, the grinding efficiency of vitrified bond grinding wheel is about twice that of resin bond diamond wheel, and the life is 2-3 times of resin bond wheel.
Single Bond VS Hybrid Bond
Hybrid bond diamond grinding wheel is usually hybrid resin and metal bond, which is mostly used for fluting grinding, also known as fluting grinding wheel.
When using hybrid resin and metal diamond grinding wheel on CNC grinding machine, it not only keep the high grinding efficiency and good self sharpening features of resin bond diamond grinding wheel, but also has the advantages of high rigidity, high heat resistance, and good surface retention of metal bond diamond wheel.
Vitrified bond and resin bond diamond wheel is mainly used for tungsten carbide blades, while hybrid bond grinding is used for tungsten carbide drill bits fluting grinding and resin bond diamond grinding wheel for sharpening process. The tungsten carbide thermal spraying roller is applied the cylindrical grinding mode, and traditional resin bond diamond wheels with large diameter are used. Diamond sanding belts are also used for grinding tungsten carbide thermal spray roller, and diamond flap wheels are used for irregular shapes of HVOF.
According to the tungsten carbide grade, grinding grain size, grinding method, machining allowance, roughness, etc, choose diamond grinding wheel for tungsten carbide. Resin bond, vitrified bond and hybrid bond are all available for selection. In some cases, metal bond and electroplated bond diamond grinding wheel may also is used.
